Group show “Love: An Anthropology of Simulated Affect” at the Bastille Design Center

This week I visited Paris for the first time to attend the exhibition Love: An Anthropology of Simulated Affect at the Bastille Design Center, curated by Danila Tkačenko and Slavica Veselinović. I was invited by Danila to participate in the exhibition with one of my photographs from my series documenting the Women’s Strike protests in Poland.

The image comes from the protests that began on 22 October 2020 in reaction to the Constitutional Tribunal ruling that further tightened abortion laws in Poland, making almost all abortions illegal. The demonstrations - commonly known as Strajk Kobiet (Women’s Strike) - became one of the largest waves of anti-government protests in recent Polish history.

The exhibition brought together photography, performance art and contemporary art to explore how expressions of love and emotion have evolved from the 20th century to today. Artists included Marina Abramović, Orlan, Ai Weiwei, Roger Ballen and Jacob Aue Sobol, alongside many other international artists and photographers.

On the second day, there was a poetry reading by Cynthia Ross and Joseph Matic. It was also a great opportunity to connect with photographers, artists and visitors from different places and backgrounds. The whole event felt alive - creative, social and slightly chaotic in the best possible way.

The exhibition was organized by the cultural organization Art-Icon and received media attention both in France and internationally, including Vogue Adria.

It was a fun and vibrant experience, very different from anything I had attended before. And yes - it was hot in every meaning of the word.
