Râsu'-plânsu' interventions:

I invite you to join me in this project by working with your own copy of the book! ‍ ‍

Râsu'-plânsu' Interventions is an ongoing artistic project based on my photographic book Râsu'-plânsu'. The project goes beyond photography, approaching the book as a space for intervention and personal expression.

During Nicolae Ceaușescu’s systematisation program (1974–1989), large parts of the population were relocated into standardised apartment blocks. These spaces imposed a new way of living, often disconnected from what people had known before.

In response, residents began to adjust their surroundings—enclosing balconies, marking informal boundaries, personalising shared spaces. These were small, everyday actions, but they carried a need to regain control, familiarity, a sense of place and belonging.

This tension between imposed structure and individual response became the foundation of the book. At the same time, the process of making the publication brought me into a similar situation.

The book became a structure I could not fully inhabit. Its physical form did not completely align with my initial intentions. I tried to push against its limitations, to mark my presence and shape it more closely to what I had in mind, but I kept encountering its constraints. In the end, I was able to produce the book with the paper and font I ultimately decided on. Yet this did not undo the experience of negotiating with its form.

I began to see this conflict not just as a personal struggle, but as something running in parallel with the experiences of those relocated to blocks of flats—living within imposed structures. I decided to approach the book in the same way they adapted their spaces.

Once printed, I began working directly with a single copy of the book. I treat it as a space for intervention: drawing, covering, inserting additional pages or elements. Through these gestures, the book becomes a unique object—something I can inhabit, transform, and make my own.

The project extends to readers as well. You may choose to engage with your copy in a personal and material way. There are no fixed rules, as long as the intervention remains within your privately owned copy. Actions can be small or radical, careful or impulsive. You can follow an instinct, test a limit, or step outside your usual way of engaging.

Through these interventions, you mark your own presence within the book. It becomes yours as a physical object - a space you can shape through your own gestures. These gestures can also draw from your own experiences - moments in which you had to adapt a space, a situation, or a structure in order to make it livable, familiar, or your own.

I hope this process encourages you to move beyond familiar ways of thinking.

DISCLAIMER:This artistic project does not constitute a new edition or modification of the original publication, but operates solely through individual interventions on privately owned copies of the original publication.

Over time, you will find below galleries documenting individual interventions on privately owned copies. I invite you to return from time to time as new contributions from readers are added.

Please send me photographs documenting your interventions on your copy of the book. The submitted images will become part of the project’s archive, documenting individual interventions made on privately owned copies. You are welcome to include a short text reflecting on your process.
